Dauphin Island is a barrier island located three miles south of the mouth of Mobile Bay in the Gulf of Mexico. Entry to the island is made by crossing a three mile long high rise bridge which was opened in July, 1982 after the original draw bridge was destroyed by Hurricane Frederic in 1979. An automobile ferry from the eastern shore also offers an entry point on the eastern end of the island. The island is approximately 14 miles long and 1 ¾ miles wide at the widest point. The eastern six miles are inhabited while the western 8 miles are undeveloped and privately owned. It is estimated that 1300 permanent residents call Dauphin Island home. The number of residents soars during vacation and holiday times.  The entire island has been designated as a bird sanctuary and thousands of visitors come to experience the annual migrations. TOWN HOLDS BERM MEETING
Some 150 residents and property owners attended the proposed West End Berm informational meeting on May 13 at the St. Edmund Catholic Parish Hall. The Mayor and Town Council members presented available information regarding the protective structure and answered questions from the audience. Many raised concern over the potential access problems this would create for Southside property owners, renters and emergency vehicles to name a few. Town officials have until June 28 to submit a request to State EMA (and FEMA) for post-disaster assistance to replace the berm that was destroyed by Gustav and Ike in 2008.

DRAINAGE PROJECT
Work on a drainage improvement project for areas South of Salt Creek Bridge (includes areas East & West of Orleans Drive) is now underway. Engineers have re-routed pipes along the Bienville Blvd median to avoid removing some 25 trees. We recommend that you use extreme caution over the coming weeks traveling these areas. Be alert and watch for detour signs!
